Offline Streaming Downloads: Devices, Limits and Expiration

Prepare offline viewing on the device you will carry, using the service’s official app. A subscription, a visible download button and a completed download are three separate checks. So are the number of devices allowed, the number of titles stored and the time remaining before playback expires.

This guide compares Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Prime Video and Apple TV using public provider documentation checked on November 3, 2026. Limits can depend on the plan, title and country. Subscription downloads are temporary access rather than ordinary video files you can freely copy between devices.

Start with the right kind of limit

For three travel tablets, check device eligibility and allowances first. For one device on a long journey, prioritize title count, available storage, and expiration. Keep simultaneous-stream and download limits in separate rows.

Netflix: distinguish monthly downloads from active downloads

Netflix supports downloads through its app on compatible Android phones and tablets, iPhones and iPads, Fire tablets, and Chromebooks with Google Play Store support. Its current download-device list does not include Windows PCs or Macs. Older operating systems may not qualify.

On mobile, use My Netflix > Downloads > See What You Can Download, then choose a movie or episode. A Download Season option is available for shows in the documented workflow. Not every title is downloadable.

The ad plan’s allowance resets on the first day of each calendar month. If you hit the 15-download limit, Netflix says to wait for the reset or change to an ad-free plan. Do not treat deleting an episode as a way to replenish a monthly allowance.

Open each download’s expiration status before departure. Netflix applies title-specific renewal and repeat-download limits, and a title that has left the service cannot be renewed.

Disney+: verify the plan and reconnect the device

Disney+ requires an eligible plan, such as Disney+ Premium or the specified Premium bundles, for Disney+ downloads. The feature works on supported mobile devices, with up to ten download devices. It is not available on computers, TV-connected devices or Windows 10 and 11 tablets.

Keep the subscription active and connect the device to the internet at least once every 30 days. Some titles have a shorter availability period or are not downloadable. Signing out removes downloaded content from the device, so avoid signing out as a casual cleanup step immediately before travel.

For Hulu content within Disney+, use the separate 25-download limit across five mobile devices. Track Disney+ and Hulu download allowances separately when planning the household’s queues.

Hulu: count the whole household’s downloads

Confirm an eligible Hulu Premium entitlement and a download button for the title. Disney’s current U.S. help lists 25 selected Hulu downloads across five supported mobile devices.

An allocation of 12 episodes on one tablet, eight on another, and five on a phone uses all 25 downloads. Coordinate the queue across profiles before a household trip.

Read the expiration displayed for each item and renew eligible content while online when needed. In a household sharing the allowance, delete finished episodes deliberately and coordinate before removing another person’s trip queue. The relevant count is the account’s content across devices, not just what you see on the tablet in your hand.

HBO Max: the 100-download tier has additional caps

HBO Max permits downloads on supported iPhones, iPads, iPod touch devices, Android phones and tablets, and Fire tablets. Basic with Ads has no downloads; Standard allows 30 and Premium 100 across the account’s mobile devices.

Both HBO Max download tiers allow up to 30 movies, and certain series are capped at 25 episodes from that series. Build the queue within those caps and the plan’s overall 30- or 100-download limit. Pay-per-view replays are excluded.

Unwatched downloads expire after 30 days or when the title leaves the service. Once playback starts, the completion window is 48 hours. Renewal requires an internet connection and an eligible title. Use the Downloads area, select the expired item and choose Renew Download.

As a planning example, starting a downloaded movie on Monday evening would make a 48-hour window unsuitable for saving the remainder until Friday. Delay starting items you intend to watch later.

Prime Video: laptop support and title-specific access

Prime Video’s download guide supports Fire tablets and its apps for iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows 10 or 11. That makes a supported laptop an option here even though Netflix’s download list differs.

Choose Download on a movie’s details page, or use the episode or season option for a show. Amazon says downloaded content cannot be played through Chromecast or AirPlay. Supported adapters may permit offline television playback on compatible devices, but test the exact arrangement before depending on it away from home.

For Prime subscription titles, the usual window is 30 days to start and 48 hours to finish after starting. The same title can be downloaded to two devices at once. Check the location- and content-specific total allowance in the app and usage rules.

Rental and purchased videos have their own terms. Read those before a separate transaction rather than applying the subscription rule to everything in the app.

Apple TV: download in a supported app, not onto the TV box

Apple documents downloading in the Apple TV app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC and Vision Pro. It also has separate download instructions for its Android app. Downloading is not available on Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, smart TVs, streaming devices or the web player.

On iPhone or iPad, find the title, select Download, then use Library > Downloaded. A Mac or PC also uses the app’s library; available download actions differ between movies and individual episodes.

Read the title’s expiration and any channel-specific quantity limit. Some subscription downloads expire 48 hours after playback begins or 30 days after download, whichever comes first. Plan the queue around the displayed dates.

For purchased or rented movies, Apple allows HD downloads while 4K versions are streaming-only under its format guidance. Check download quality separately from the title’s streaming badge.

Estimate storage from your actual queue

Check the storage used by a completed download at the quality setting you intend to use. Duration, title, service, and quality affect file size.

For example, ten files of 650 MB each require about 6.5 GB in decimal units. Replace 650 MB with the size shown for your downloaded episode and leave additional space for other apps and normal device operation.

Where the app displays a quality choice, compare the available options on the screen you will use. A smaller file may be useful for a long trip, but the decision should reflect the actual space saved.

Complete a departure check without wasting the viewing window

Before leaving reliable internet, confirm that every item has finished downloading, the intended profile can access it, and its expiration suits the trip. Check required captions or audio tracks on that device. Make sure the tablet is charged and the intended headphones work.

An offline playback test can reveal a problem, but starting the program may also start its viewing countdown. Test an item you plan to watch soon, or a short separate item, rather than accidentally starting every film in the queue days early.

Keep the app signed in and avoid reinstalling it after preparing downloads. If something fails, record the exact message and consult the provider’s download instructions while you still have internet access. For choosing a plan, compare the current subscription tiers alongside these offline needs.
