Four Mile Scenic Drive (Route) -On Big Island, Hawaii-UHD 4K

A lot of people are saying this 4 mile scenic drive on the Hāmākua Coast is a must do drive. Well, if did not have the time or for whatever the reason you missed the drive, here is the virtual drive for your enjoyment. We recommend you driving there yourself because the video does not present nor justify the beauty of the route (it may seem to be boring), however if you never been there here is the video.
The road twists and snakes through a lush tropical rain forest lined with streams. Several stops allow for breathtaking views of the ocean and coast. You will be in and among a wide variety of trees.

The Big Island is the largest and the southeastern-most of the Hawaiian islands, a chain of volcanic islands in the North Pacific Ocean. With an area of 4,028 square miles (10,430 km2), it is larger than all of the other islands in the archipelago combined and is the largest island in the United States.

Heiau-Pololu Valley Lookout-King Kamehameha Statue-On Big Island, Hawaii-UHD 4K

This video shows the Puukohola Heiau, the Pololu Valley Lookout and the king Kamehameha Statue. This National Historic Site is home to one of the largest restored heiau (temple) in Hawaii and is part of the National Park System. Heiau were sacred places of worship for Native Hawaiians, and Puukohola Heiau was a site built to fulfill a historic prophecy.

There is limited parking at the Pololu valley lookout, just park along the road as you come to the overlook. A great view from up top, but don’t miss the steep hike down into the valley. The ocean is magnificent at the bottom. You will miss the King Kamehameha Statue before finding it.

You will see the Hawaii Volcano National Park, and find the Jagger museum, see steam vents caused by lava under the crust of the earth. The Thurston lava tube was fascinating, we also visited the hidden underground tunnel and Devastation Trail.

At Sulphur Banks (Ha’akulamanu), volcanic gases seep out of the ground along with groundwater steam. These gases are rich in carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide — the gas that smells like rotten eggs. Some sulfur gases deposit pure crystals at Sulphur Banks. Other sulfur gases form sulfuric acid which breaks down the lava to clay. This clay is stained red and brown with iron oxide.

The Jagger Museum is named after Thomas A. Jagger, and it contains many exhibits and artifacts on volcanology. The Thurston lava tube is a tube through the earth that was carved out by a flow of lava many centuries ago, and you must go through a rainforest jungle in order to reach this spectacular natural wonder.

Devastation Trail is a trail that leads through an area that was devastated by volcanic activity when Kīlauea Iki erupted in 1959. Seeing the cinders made us realize just how devastating the volcanic eruption was.

Lava Tree Park On Big Island, Hawaii-UHD 4K

This unusual volcanic feature is the result of a lava flow that swept through this forested area and left behind lava molds of the tree trunks. Lava Tree State Monument is a park on the island of Hawaii. It takes about 30 min to complete the walk around the park. There is no charge for parking and entry and there are restrooms.

Ancient Wonder: Petroglyph Sites On Big Island, Hawai-UHD 4K

Visited 2 petroglyph sites in the Big Island of Hawaii. The Big Island contains the largest number of petroglyphs, or prehistoric rock carvings, in the state of Hawaii as well as the Pacific region. Puakō Petroglyph Archeological Preserve, a 233-acre preservation area located near the Mauna Lani Resort in South Kohala, is home to the state’s second largest collection. Within the Puakō preserve more than 3,000 “images in stone,” or “k’i’i pohaku” have been identified, and although the true meanings of these symbols are unknown, it is generally believed they are a record of significant events in the lives of ancient Hawaiians. Within the preserve you can access an impressive field that contains about 1,200 of these petroglyphs, by taking an easy 1.5-mile walking trail. Walking through the trail leading to the petroglyphs site is quite enchanting.

Another petroglyph site is on the grounds of the Waikoloa Resort. The Waikoloa Petroglyph Preserve is a great place to have a close view of the Hawaiian petroglyphs. Many of the petroglyph fields in this area reside on the Ala Kahakai Trail, also known as the King’s Trail, full of historic sites including sacred heiau, Hawaiian fishponds and settlement ruins. Unfortunately graffiti is also out there so choose for yourself which are * real * & which are modern.

Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park In Big Island, Hawai-UHD 4K

Visited the Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park on the west coast of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. This for Hawaiians who broke a kapu (one of the ancient laws) could avoid certain death by fleeing to this place of refuge or puʻuhonua. The offender would be absolved by a priest and freed to leave. Defeated warriors and non-combatants could also find refuge here during times of battle. The grounds just outside the Wall that encloses the puʻuhonua were home to several generations of powerful chiefs. In includes a complex of archeological sites including: temple platforms, royal fishponds, sledding tracks, and some coastal village sites.

The park contains the Hale O Keawe heiau, which was originally built by a Kona chief named Kanuha in honor of his father King Keaweʻīkekahialiʻiokamoku. After the death of Keaweʻīkekahialiʻiokamoku, his bones were entombed within the heiau.

With an area of 4,028 square miles (10,430 km2), it is larger than all of the other islands in the archipelago combined and is the largest island in the United States.

Akaka Falls In Big Island, Hawai-UHD 4K

You will walk through lush tropical vegetation, rainforest filled with wild orchids, bamboo groves and draping ferns. You will see scenic vista points overlooking the cascading Kahuna Falls and as you follow the paved footpath, you’ll discover towering Akaka Falls which plummets 442-feet into a stream-eroded gorge. Beautiful Akaka Falls (more than twice as tall as Niagara falls) is perhaps Hawaii Island’s most famous waterfall.

The rivers of Akaka falls are the native habitat for the O’opu (a type of fish) and the ‘opae’kala’ole (a type of shrimp) that are endemic (biologically unique) to Hawaii (that spawns in stream above the waterfall, but matures in the sea). Like many native plants and animals that evolved here in the islands, these two organisms have developed unique characteristics unlike animals anywhere else in the world. They are both capable of climbing this waterfall (442 feet) by use of a specially adapted suction cup on their bellies. This suction disk on their bellies allows them to cling to the wet rocks behind and adjacent to the waterfall. Using this disk, they climb back up to the stream when it is time to spawn.

Boat Tour Along Na Pali Coast, Kauai, Hawai-UHD 4K

No trip to Kauai is complete without seeing the Na Pali Coast, a must do in Kauai. We took a boat tour sailing along the coast of Na Pali, along the way we saw lots of sea life (such as turtles, dolphins), and waterfalls. The coast was so dramatic that is why Pirates of the Caribbean and King Kong had scenes shot there.

Have you ever seen a cave with an open ceiling? The sea caves along the Na Pali Coast are formed from the harsh wave action of the Pacific Ocean slamming into the porous lava. The first cave is actually a hollowed-out lava tube, and may have served as a place where ancient Hawaiians could rest in their canoes when traveling along the coast. We do not know what the early Hawaiians called this cave, hence the “Open Ceiling Cave” best describes it. This natural cathedral boasts turquoise blue water, massive walls, and a bright sunlit interior. On calm days, people can safely enter the Open Ceiling Cave in small boats. The interior is large enough to circle around and treat passengers to a view of the sky above through the enormous open ceiling.

The second cave we show you is long and deep. When we reached the end, it was pitch dark.

Kauai is millions of years older than the other inhabited islands in the Hawaiian island chain. To be honest, it does not offer the quantity or quality of snorkeling spots of say the Big Island or Maui — you may not find the coral to be colorful and exotic, although there is no doubt that the natural beauty of this location adds to the enjoyment of the snorkeling. Kauai is beautiful, and you can certainly enjoy being in the water, but don’t have great expectations for what you will see under the water. (And this is the only slightly negative thing we have to say about this gorgeous place.)

The outlook and hikes offer rich scenery into Waimea Canyon on Kauai’s West Side. Mark Twain called it “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” stretching 10 miles long, one mile wide and 3,000 feet deep. The Waimea Canyon Lookout provides panoramic views of crested buttes, rugged crags and deep valley gorges. The grand inland vistas go on for miles. The main road, Waimea Canyon Drive, leads you to a lower lookout point and the main Waimea Canyon Overlook, offering views of Kauai’s dramatic interior. The road continues into the mountains and ends at Kokee State Park from there are also numerous trails for beginners and for seasoned hikers. We found this map is useful:
