Visited 2 petroglyph sites in the Big Island of Hawaii. The Big Island contains the largest number of petroglyphs, or prehistoric rock carvings, in the state of Hawaii as well as the Pacific region. Puakō Petroglyph Archeological Preserve, a 233-acre preservation area located near the Mauna Lani Resort in South Kohala, is home to the state’s second largest collection. Within the Puakō preserve more than 3,000 “images in stone,” or “k’i’i pohaku” have been identified, and although the true meanings of these symbols are unknown, it is generally believed they are a record of significant events in the lives of ancient Hawaiians. Within the preserve you can access an impressive field that contains about 1,200 of these petroglyphs, by taking an easy 1.5-mile walking trail. Walking through the trail leading to the petroglyphs site is quite enchanting.
Another petroglyph site is on the grounds of the Waikoloa Resort. The Waikoloa Petroglyph Preserve is a great place to have a close view of the Hawaiian petroglyphs. Many of the petroglyph fields in this area reside on the Ala Kahakai Trail, also known as the King’s Trail, full of historic sites including sacred heiau, Hawaiian fishponds and settlement ruins. Unfortunately graffiti is also out there so choose for yourself which are * real * & which are modern.
The Big Island is the largest and the southeastern-most of the Hawaiian islands, a chain of volcanic islands in the North Pacific Ocean. With an area of 4,028 square miles (10,430 km2), it is larger than all of the other islands in the archipelago combined and is the largest island in the United States.
